Ewer (Dutta-10019)

EWER,

Lê Dynasty, Vietnam, 15th century.

Height: 22cm.

The ewer has a plate-shaped opening, a long spout, a symmetrical handle, a Yuhuchun-style body with a short base, the body ornamented in the centre and on two sides with lace-work showing a parrot amidst foliage with traces of red pigment. The rest of the object is decorated in clouds, underglazed in blue. One can see the Persian influence in the metallic prototypes.

For a similar object, see the one in the collection of Ken Baars, shown on page 335, fig. 328, Vietnamese Ceramics, A Separate Tradition, John Stevenson & John Guy, 1997.
